Fantasy

See High Fantasy for Sword and Socery type fantasy books (typical features a quest or mission in search for something).  This here features books that have fantastical elements but isn’t quite like Lord of the Rings.  They are fantasy, but there isn’t a far off land (or maybe there is but it doesn’t have a Middle Earth like feel) with explosions of magic and vast world of mythical creatures.  Though these books may have certain elements of High Fantasy books, they still retain a different feel.  (It’s hard to explain… >.<)  They lack the quests, epic travel logs, and a heavy emphasis on the magic or swords/weaponry.

Books are listed by author’s last name.  A series will be counted as one entry.  The summary of the first book will be the only summary given as later book summary may include spoilers.  Titles that are hyperlinked are linked to their Goodreads page.

She was wrong.  For generations, the Frost family has run the Museum of Magical and Rare Artifacts, handing down guardianship from mother to daughter, always keeping their secrets to “family only.”  Gathered within museum’s walls is a collection dedicated to the Grimm fairy tales and to the rare items the family has acquired: Cinderella’s glass slipper, Snow White’s poisoned apple, the evil queen’s magic mirror, Sleeping Beauty’s enchanted spinning wheel…  Seventeen-year-old Bianca Frost wants none of it, dreaming instead of a career in art or photography or…well, anything except working in the family’s museum. She knows the items in the glass display cases are fakes because, of course, magic doesn’t really exist.  She’s about to find out how wrong she is.

At least, most of them didn’t.  Shy, studious Persephone Leland would far rather devote herself to her secret magic studies than enter society and look for a suitable husband. But right as the inevitable season for “coming out” is about to begin, Persy and her twin sister discover that their governess in magic has been kidnapped as part of a plot to gain control of the soon-to-be Queen Victoria. Racing through Mayfair ballrooms and royal palaces, the sisters overcome bad millinery, shady royal spinsters, and a mysterious Irish wizard. And along the way, Persy learns that husband hunting isn’t such an odious task after all, if you can find the right quarry.

Dorothy Must DieDorothy Must Die

I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero.  But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?  Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still the yellow brick road, though—but even that’s crumbling.  What happened?  Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.  My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas.  I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.  I’ve been trained to fight.  And I have a mission:  Remove the Tin Woodman’s heart.  Steal the Scarecrow’s brain.  Take the Lion’s courage.  Then and only then—Dorothy must die!

Other NormalsThe Other Normals

Given the chance, fifteen-year-old Peregrine “Perry” Eckert would dedicate every waking moment to Creatures & Caverns, an epic role-playing game rich with magical creatures, spell casting, and deadly weapons. The world of C&C is where he feels most comfortable in his own skin. But that isn’t happening–not if his parents have anything to do with it. Concerned their son lacks social skills, they ship him off to summer camp to become a man. They want him to be outdoors playing with kids his own age and meeting girls–rather than indoors alone, with only his gaming alter ego for company. Perry knows he’s in for the worst summer of his life.  Everything changes, however, when Perry gets to camp and stumbles into the World of the Other Normals. There he meets Mortin Enaw, one of the creators of C&C, and other mythical creatures from the game, including the alluring Ada Ember, whom Perry finds more beautiful than any human girl he’s ever met. Perry’s new otherworldly friends need his help to save their princess and prevent mass violence. As they embark on their quest, Perry realizes that his nerdy childhood has uniquely prepared him to be a great warrior in this world, and maybe even a hero. But to save the princess, Perry will have to learn how to make real connections in the human world as well.
